on raaga MOHANA for music learners; a video explanation followed by text.

                                                                     MOHANA

Raag Mohana in carnatic classical is an owdava owdava raag, as it has no all seven swaras, and the arohana and avarohana are the same. It is the janya raag of Harikambhoji.

Arohana -     sa re ga pa da sa

Avarohana - sa da pa ga re sa

In this raag we don't find ma (Madhyama) and Ne (Nishhadha)

Sa - constant

re - Chathusruthi reshabha

ga - Anthara Gandhara

pa - constant

da - Chathusruthi dhaivatha

sa*- thara shadyma constant

In western music if sa is started from c scale, C D E G A C becomes this raag. It is very melodious to play on flute, and it is said that lord Sri Krishna loved to play this raag on his flute so he is called MOHANA Krishna and his murali (flute) is called MOHANA murali.

"Vara veena mrudhu pane" is the popular pillari geetham for the beginners of classical music.

"Ninnu kori yunnanura" is the varnam also for the beginners to learn a little bit larger than the pillari geethm and smaller than any krithi or kirthana.

Popular krithis in this raag are

Raara rajeeva lochana by Mysore Vasudev Ayyer

Raama Ninne Namminanura by Thyagaraj

Nannu palimpaga nadachi vachithiva by Thyagaraj

There are lots of film songs on this raag right from old films to new films.

Lahiri lahiri lahirilo ---Mayabazar by ghantasala to veyi vela gopemmala by Ilayaraja there are thousands of songs which particularly composed on this raag are all time hits. I personally opine that the music mastro Ilayaraja loves two raagas particulay. One is Udaya Ravi Chandrika and the second one is none other than The melodious raga MOHANA!
