Desription on the raaga Hindola for the learners of classical music

                                                                       

                                                                             HINDOLA

           Raag Hindola in carnatic classical music is known as a janya raaga which means a derived raaga. It is an audava raaga because it has no all seven swaras in it. This raaga is equivalent to malkaus in Hindusthani style of music.

           It is a symmetric raaga like mohana and some others and an audava raga which means the five swaras raaga. So it is called a pentatonic raaga. 

           The raaga consists of five swaras sa ga ma da ne and we dont find re (reshabha) and pa (panchama) in it. It the janya raaga of Hanumathodi leaving rishbha and panchama.

           It is one of the most beautiful heart touching ragaas in carnatic classical music. The musicians love to play a wonderful  kalpana swaras and a lot of gamakas in this raaga in their concerts with their utmost ecstasy. 

          The swaras in this raaga are as follows

          Arohana:          sa ga ma da ne sa
          Avarohana:       sa ne da ma ga sa     

sa - constant

ga - sadharana gandhara

ma - sudha madhyama

da - sudha dhaivatha

ne - kakali nishadha

sa*- thara shadyama  constant

        There are so many popular krithis/kirthanas in this raaga written by Thagaraya, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Annamayya, and some others.

         Samaja varagamana by Thyagaraja

        Govardhana Gireesham by Muthuswamy Dikshitar

        Deva devam bhaje by Annamayya

        Kondalalo nelakonna by Annamayya

        We find so many film songs in this raaga, stand for the most melodious to store in the minds of music lovers. It is found that the telugu film Director Raghavendra Rao loves to get tuned in Hindola raaga in his each and every film. The songs in this raaga in his films composed by the famous music director Keeravani are all time hits.
